SER 2018 Convention - Blue Ridge Rails

Come to the mountains in Western NC for a great weekend with model train clinics, prototype tours, home layout tours and operation sessions at the Blue Ridge Rails Convention. 

The Convention is being held at the Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center at 91 North Lakeshore Drive, Lake Junaluska, NC 28745.

 

  • Thursday May, 24, registration is from Noon until 5 PM, operation session and home layout tours.
  • Friday May 25 and Saturday May 26, Clinics, operation Sessions, home layout tours and banquet.
  • There will be several operation sessions, Thursday, Friday, Satruday and Sunday.

Convention Registration

The Bethea Welcome Center is a multipurpose building that serves as a welcome center for the region and location for lodging and event registration. This center will be the registration point for the convention as well.  Registrants will need to pick up their convention packets containing name tags, event tickets and tee shirts.

Accommodations

A rate of $120/Night has been given for the (Host Hotel) Terrace Hotel and $99/Night for the Lambuth Inn. For reservations call 800-222-4930 and mention the special NMRA rate.

Click on Online Registration above. Make sure that all required fields are filled out. If you change your mind and do not want to enter any information go to the bottom of the form and click on Reset.

Once you have entered all of the information click on Submit. This will bring up a second page where you can confirm your entries. You will also be asked to select your Payment method. You can pay by PayPal or by Credit/Debit card. Note you can use your browser back arrow to return to this page.

Contests

Judged Model and Photo contests will be held, as well as Achievement Program judging and Popular Vote contest.

The Judged model contest will require completed Contest Entry Form #901 and Contest Judges Score Sheet #902. The Judged Photograph Contest will require a completed Contest Entry Form #901. The Achievement Program Judging will require a completed Contest Entry Form #901 and appropriate Achievement Program Assessment  Form. The above contests will be judged following NMRA Contest Rules and SER Contest guidelines.

The theme for the Popular Vote contest is “Logging in The Western North Carolina Mountains ”. Entries maybe models, photographs, art or crafts that relate to any aspect of WNC Logging Industry. All entries in the Popular Vote Contest will require a completed Contest Entry Form #901.
Popular Vote Models and Photographs may be entered in the appropriate Judged Contest if accompanied by the additional Forms required for Judged Contests.

Activities of Interest

Craggy Mountain Line, Inc. is a non-profit organization which was formed in 2001 in order to acquire the last three miles of the Craggy Mountain line, an historic section of railroad located in Buncombe County, North Carolina.  CML operates approximately 3.45 miles of rail line known as the Asheville to Craggy Branch, which is part of the former Southern Railroad located in Woodfin Township, Buncombe County, NC.

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is located in the heart of Bryson City, NC just minutes from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  This scenic rail excursions take you from the historic depot in Bryson City, through the beautiful countryside of Western North Carolina. They are one of the top Fun things to do in North Carolina for families. Home Layout Tours

Due to the mountainous region of the area, all layouts visits will be done using your own GPS device or self-generated computer maps. 

                              

Apple Valley Model Railroad Club - Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm.

This 22 x 100 foot HO scale railroad is located inside the historic Hendersonville, NC Railroad Depot and has a Western North Carolina setting. The main yard is Asheville, NC where mainline trains run south to Spartanburg, SC and east to Spencer, NC.  At Hickory, NC. the Carolina and Northwestern railroad departs to the upper level through Lenoir and Mortimer and joins with the W.M. Ritter logging railroad at Edgemont. The scenery is basically complete but it is constantly being updated to enhance the overall effect. Digitrax DCC (simplex and duplex) is used to control the trains. The layout was featured in the xxxx issue of Model Railroader. There is also a Garden Scale layout outside by track side. French Broad e’N’pire NTRAK Club – Saturday 10 am to 2 pm and Sunday 10 am to 2 pm.

The FBE is a 25 x 32 foot N scale NTRAK modular layout. NTRAK is an international standard for a system of individual modules that when joined together allow for layouts larger than most people have room for. The club gets its name from the Greenville and French Broad River Railroad which was chartered in 1855 and operated between Greenville, SC and Asheville, NC. Track is 99% complete and scenery is about 80% complete. Digitrax DCC and WiFi are used to control the trains. This layout is handicap accessible.

Joe Dunn’s Rathole Division of the Norfolk Southern Railroad – Saturday 10 am to 2 pm and Sunday 10 am to 2 pm.

This large N scale layout represents the Norfolk Southern from Chattanooga, TN to St. Louis, MO. with a mainline length of approximately 6.5 scale miles. The layout is fully sceniced with the scenery being over 7 feet tall in some areas. You will see long trains being pulled by a mix of Southern, CSX, Conrail and Norfolk Southern motive power. Digitrax DCC (simplex and duplex) is used to control the trains. The layout was featured in the Nov/Dec 2016 issue of N Scale Magazine. This layout is handicap accessible.

Bill Dye’s Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Monongahela RR – Thursday 1 to 5 pm and Saturday 10 am to 2 pm.

This is a 30 x 18 foot double deck N scale layout currently in the construction phase. The lower level depicts the Pittsburgh area including Glenwood yard, the P&LE Station and many Pittsburgh area industries. The upper level is the B&O route from Pittsburgh to Youngstown, OH and then on to Chicago and Cleveland represented by staging yards. Also modeled is a branch line from Harmony to Punxsutawney, PA and then to Buffalo, NY. Bench work and the mainline track and yards are complete but most industry tracks are still in work. Track is Atlas code 55 with all turnouts scratch built using the Fast Tracks templates. While little scenery has been completed to date, many structures are in place to help bring the railroad past the “plywood plains” state. NCE DCC is used to control the trains. This layout is not handicap accessible.
