About US

From the Superintendent

Division 15 is one of 15 divisions that make up the NMRA Southeastern Region. The Southeastern Region is one of 17 world wide regions that makeup the NMRA.

Division 15‘s objectives are to encourage, and enhance members and potential members participation in the hobby of model railroading.  We hold two regular meetings and two mini-connventions each year.  All meetings have at least one modeling clinic. The mini-connventions have at least four clinics and a popular vote contest. A periodic newsletter titled “Division 15 Newsletter” is provided to all Division 15 members.  We now have a division page here on the SER website.  We have also established a Yahoo group “Land of Sky Division” for communication among members.  Several members of Division 15 are participating in the NMRA Achievement Program.

The Division 15 membership is made up of active NMRA members who reside within the portion of North Carolina described as Western North Carolina. The boundaries of Division 15 encompass the following North Carolina counties: Avery, Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania and Yancey.

Meet the Board

Superintendent- Ken O'Brien

Ken has been model railroading since the late 1970’s. He’s an anthracite roads fan, primarily the Lackawanna Railroad; so he’s currently planning a layout of the Bangor and Portland Division of that road. Ken was a board member of the NJ Division, Mid Eastern Region, doing various jobs, for 14 years, before retiring here in Western North Carolina.

Assistant Super-- Chuck Place

I have been a model railroad enthusiast for over 65 years and an N scale modeler since 1967, although my interests cross the spectrum of scales and gauges. I am currently a member of the French Broad e‘N’pire NTRAK Club and the Apple Valley Model RR Club in Hendersonville as well as the NMRA Operations Special Interest Group and an informal operating group loosely known as the Carolina Boomers. I have been an NMRA member since 1974 and served previously as division super, vice president and president of the Sunshine Region in Florida. While SSR president, I served as a member of the NMRA National Board of Trustees from 1984 to 1988. I have been on several national committees, including the N scale Standards, Publications and Promotions committees and have served as a regional and national contest judge. I hold achievement awards for Volunteer, Official, Author and Chief Dispatcher. I volunteered to act as Division 15 Assistant Superintendent last year when Ken O’Brien moved up to Superintendent.

Clerk-- Gordon Fewster

Gordon has been a model railroader and railfan since the late 1940’s when he joined his father building a hirail layout and watching NYC steam engines being serviced at the Wayneport, NY coaling plant. He is currently building his third HO Ontario Southern Railway. He has been a member of the NRHS since 1972 and his membership in the NMRA was resumed in 1986.

Paymaster---Greg Williams

I began modeling N gauge in 1971 after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy. Then two years later relocation to Atlanta halted modeling until 2002 when a G scale layout with a water feature was created in the backyard of our Kennesaw home. As a member of the Piedmont Division I assisted with audio/visual setup for division meetings, worked Boy Scouts merit badge sessions, and participated in the Piedmont Pilgrimage program. Two years ago we moved into our retirement home in Highlands, NC and due to limit space my current project is the creation of a N gauge layout that will need to be suspended from the ceiling in the garage.
